MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS

At the end of 2009 the Society completed its 13th year of a programme to record all the inscriptions in the churches and churchyards of the county and over 50% of the parishes had been covered.  This is valuable work as the surface of many stones is deteriorating rapidly.

For each parish we also record any nonconformist graveyards and, sometimes, older parish cemeteries, but not normally newer council cemeteries. We publish a booklet of memorials and graveyard plan/plans for each parish recorded, but careful checking and editing takes time. Other reasons may also hold up publication, so please be patient if you are waiting for a particular booklet. Details of the published Memorial Inscriptions books can be found on our Publications page.

The big area of the county so far virtually unrecorded lies to the south west of Northampton and includes the hundreds of Chipping Warden, Fawsley, Greens Norton, Kings Sutton and Towcester. If anyone lives within a reasonable distance of this area and would be interested in doing some recording, please get in touch.

We welcome new members and you do not have to be a member of the society to take part or to commit yourself to each session.   Do not worry if you have never done this before, experienced members will be there to help guide you.
