MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS

At the end of 2007 the Society had completed its 11th year of a programme to record all the inscriptions in the churches and churchyards of the county and over 50% of the parishes had been covered.  This is valuable work as the surface of many stones is deteriorating rapidly.

For each parish we also record any nonconformist graveyards and, sometimes, older parish cemeteries, but not normally newer council cemeteries. We publish a booklet of memorials and graveyard plan/plans for each parish recorded, but careful checking and editing takes time. Other reasons may also hold up publication, so please be patient if you are waiting for a particular booklet. Details of the published Memorial Inscriptions books can be found on our Publications page.

The big area of the county so far virtually unrecorded lies to the south west of Northampton and includes the hundreds of Chipping Warden, Fawsley, Greens Norton, Kings Sutton and Towcester. If anyone lives within a reasonable distance of this area and would be interested in doing some recording, please get in touch.

We welcome new members and you do not have to be a member of the society to take part or to commit yourself to each session.   Do not worry if you have never done this before, experienced members will be there to help guide you.

2008 Programme

Recording visits will start after the Easter break. As far as the Northern recording group is concerned the plan is to complete recording in the remaining parishes in Huxloe Hundred and then move back into Polebrook Hundred where several large graveyards, including Oundle, remain.  For details of the first few visits see below.

In addition, it is planned to re-establish a group on the Northampton area and start by completing recording in the churches in Northampton itself. Some former members of this group plus some new volunteers have already come forward and work is in hand to finalise a programme. The recording day will probably be Tuesday.

Both groups as always welcome new volunteers.

Enquiries regarding volunteering for either group should be sent to Mary Ginns on 0115 9373199 or at msginns@aol.com
or for the northern group only to David Crombie at david@jc-crombie.fsnet.co.uk
or for the Northampton group only to Angela Malin email angela.malin@btinternet.com
